Mourinho Likely To Make Several Changes To His Team For Northampton Clash

Jose Mourinho is set to make a host of changes to his starting eleven when Manchester United travel down to the sixfields stadium to face Northampton in the EFL cup third round tomorrow night.

David De Gea, Paul Pogba, and Eric Bailly are all expected to be rested by Mourinho who will be looking at getting back to winning ways after losing 3-1 to Watford last time out.

The Portuguese is likely to hand Memphis Depay, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Sergio Romero and Ashley Young a first start of the new campaign against the cobblers with Michael Carrick also expected to come into the centre of midfield whilst goalkeeper Sam Johnstone could be handed a place on the substitute’s bench as he awaits his first team bow.

However one name who will not be amongst the travelling party is Axel Tuanzebe. The youngster was involved in Under 23 action against Derby County at Old Trafford on Monday night and is unlikely to be involved.

It is no secret that United’s form has suffered of late. Defeats against Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford have dampened the mood inside Old Trafford but with Northampton up next on the menu list, it is essential United return to winning ways should Mourinho wish to turn Manchester United’s season around and to avoid the fans turn on him and his team.

Since his arrival in England the Portuguese has enjoyed a successful run in the League Cup boasting an impressive three League Cup winners medals to date and this season’s League Cup provides Mourinho an excellent opportunity to claim his first piece of silverware as the new United boss.

The League Cup has always arguably been fourth on the club list of priorities but this season that could change. With Mourinho having such a big squad on his hands, it gives the likes of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Timothy Fosu-Mensah a real opportunity to prove to the Portuguese that they deserve a place in his starting eleven and who knows should United manage to secure an emphatic victory tomorrow night it could act as the perfect springboard to reignite the clubs league form.
